In the vicinity of the Uniejów thermal spa on the banks of the Warta River, the historic 14th century Castle of the Archbishops of Gniezno invites you to visit the castle tower, the undergrounds and the courtyard, formerly used for knight’s tournaments and courtly celebrations. Enjoy an excellent dinner in the stylish Herbowa Restaurant or sleep as a king in the Hotel.
Built as a gothic defensive fortress, from the 14th century the castle was the seat of the archbishops of Gniezno, the first capital of Poland. Diocesan synods and clergy conventions used to be held in its walls. Furthermore, the building served as a prison for disobedient priests or infidels. Among the imprisoned ones there was also a sculptor from Gdańsk, Hans Brandt. The artist was imprisoned in the Uniejów fortress by Bishop Oleśnicki because he escaped from Gniezno with the advance payment for the tombstone of St. Adalbert. According to source materials, he finished his work in chains.
During the wars archbishops kept treasures from the Gniezno Cathedral in the defensive castle to protect them from robbers. During the Thirteen Years’ War between the Prussian Confederation, allied with the Kingdom of Poland, and the Teutonic Order state in 1454-66, the church kept such valuable items as chasubles, chalices, monstrances and even holy relics: a hand and the head of St Adalbert. The legend about the local white lady (“Uniejka”) who was to save the town’s inhabitants from robbers, lurking for the possessions hidden in the castle, illustrate this fascinating history.
In 1525 the castle was devastated by a fire and was subsequently rebuilt into a Renaissance Bishops residence. It gradually lost its defensive character. In the first half of the 17th century it was converted into a palace. The palace was abandoned after the secularization conducted by the Prussian authorities in the 18th century. In the first half of the 19th century, the tsarist general, Aleksander Toll, rebuilt the palace and converted it into a summer residence.
The castle tower, the yard and the underground room where the dungeons are located, are opened to visitors. Guided tours are available. The tower is accessible from April to 30th November between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. (spring and summer), and between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. (autumn). Take a walk through the park, an 19th century English landscape garden with various nature monuments.

The thermal pools complex is the most recognisable and the most popular facility in Uniejów. It is entirely heated with geo-thermal energy. Uniejów Thermal Park offers a number of attractions related to the medicinal and recreational properties of water. Being the combination of both – a modern thermal spa resort and traditional aquapark – it is a perfect place for family holidays. If you travel to Poland, you simply cannot miss it!

All year round, you can use the facilities that are available in the open air: heated brine pools, recreational pools equipped with a massage system, a Jacuzzi island, an artificial “wild” river, children’s pools with slides and wading pools, a water bar, and even a beach and a pier if the weather is favourable.
Inside the thermal park building there is a large swimming pool. Moreover, you can find there the sauna and SPA (Wellness&SPA) zone which offers various forms of relaxation. An interesting offer is also the sanarium which is a combination of four types of bath and the play of lights that relaxes our bodies and minds. The medicinal properties of ultraviolet light can be taken advantage of in the special UV room. The aromatic bath complex and the graduation tower are based on aromatherapy and they have soothing or stimulating properties thanks to the smells and oils spreading around them. Traditionalists are offered the irreplaceable banya (steam baths), where you can take a hot bath.

Uniejów Thermal Spa
Uniejów Thermal Park was awarded in the prestigious “The Seven Wonders of Poland” competition which has been organized by the National Geographic Traveler (Polish edition) since 2011. Our thermal spa resort was reviewed as one of the best in Poland in 2013. Nowadays it can compete with other recognisable spa resorts in Europe, such as Gellert (Budapest, Hungary), Velingrad (Bulgaria) or Karlove Vary (Czech Republic).

Opening hours: Pools – 10:00-22:00 Restaurant: 11.00-22.00 Wellness&SPA: Monday-Friday 16:00-22:00 Saturday- Sunday and holidays 10:00-22:00.
Uniejów is beautifully located in the Warta River Valley and is excellent prepared for active leisure. Explore the local forests, meadows, water reservoirs, small ponds, wetlands and peat lands.
The nature complex “Zieleń” is located in the proglacial valley of the Warta river and covers almost 80 ha of forests, meadows and old river beds. It lies in the Uniejów Area of Protected Landscape and is part of the Natura 2000 area “The Middle Warta Valley”. An unquestionable attraction is its location – in the direct vicinity of the health resort zone of Uniejów. Patients, tourists as well as inhabitants can easily reach it and go for a walk.
The didactic path was modernised in 2018. It leads through the most interesting places of the complex. Its length is 2.7 km and the walking time is 1.5 to 2 hours.
The course of the path is marked. There are life-size animal models set up at six points. These are – elk, roe deer, deer, wild boar, beavers hare. This allows visitors to appreciate the size differences of animals living in our forests, from hare to moose. A QR code is placed on each animal, which redirects to a website with basic information about the species presented and an additional topic discussed.
A shelter with a fire pit was built along the route. The construction was a joint investment – of the Forestry Commission, which allocated the wood, and of the “Gęgawa” Hunting Circle in Uniejów.

Horseback riding in Uniejów is facilitated by the animal-oriented infrastructure in the Knight’s Castle and on the site of the Mill Farmstead (stalls, stableman services). Here one can hire a horse team and take a ride in the historic park.
The Market square is located centrally in the preserved medieval urban layout of Uniejów. Particularly prominent is the 25-metre-high neo-Baroque bell tower. A real architectural gem is the 14th-century collegiate church. The elements that are of the greatest historic importance include the 14th-century cross-ribbed vaulting that has survived in the chancel, and the bronze sarcophagus, dating back to 1666, of Blessed Bogumił – the archbishop who crowned Bolesław the Bold. The archbishop’s relics are still kept in the collegiate church.
The unflagging importance of the market square for the town’s life can be proved by the fact that this is where the annual Great Knights’ Tournament begins.
The chloride-sodium mineral water contains sodium, potassium, magnesium, fluorine, sulphur and bromine compounds. It can even compete with Baltic Sea waters when it comes to iodine content! Because of its properties, the water is used in rehabilitation, and in preventive medicine and treatment of the circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and musculo-skeletal and digestive system disorders, as well as muscle and skin diseases. Taking a bath in hot brine brings relief in the case of injuries and rheumatic disorders, and it relieves stress and tiredness. Stop over by the brine graduation towers and fountains, situated in different parts of the town, to breathe in air full of healing mineral components coming from the thermal water.
Health treatments and biological regeneration
The modern thermal pools complex “Uniejów Thermal Park” offers everything you need to feel healthier and stronger. In the sauna and SPA (Wellness&SPA) zone, you will find various forms of biological regeneration and relaxation. The sanarium (i.e. a bio-sauna) encourages taking baths in hot air at a temperature of 40-60°C and a higher humidity, sometimes with the aroma of herbal extracts added. In the special UV room, visitors can take advantage of the medicinal properties of ultraviolet light. Because of a thermal shock, especially after leaving the sauna, a visit to the snow room, where the temperature is between -5 and -13oC, causes numerous beneficial reactions in human organism, e.g. it reduces the muscle tension, improves immunity and speeds up your metabolism.
You will also find attractive spa and wellness offers in other facilities in Uniejów: Apart hotel “Termy Uniejów” ****, Medical SPA Hotel Lawendowe Termy ****, Uniejów Park Spa and Uniejów Hotel**** ecoActive&Spa.
